A senior official said that Chennai Port Trust is investing INR 120 crore over the next three years in green energy projects in its bid to become a ‘Green’ .

Cyril C George, Chennai Port Trust deputy chairman, said they had taken the first step with the installation of roof top solar panel on Port Trust Hospital.

An investment of INR 100 crore will be earmarked for wind energy, another five crore for solar plant, and the rest for online monitoring of environmental pollution.

He said that “Though all the 12 major ports in the country are moving towards generating power through renewable energy sources, we are the first one on the east coast to implement the roof top solar plant. Our aim is to keep the environment cleaner and greener with the premises.”

On Friday, M.A. Bhaskarachar commissioned the solar power plant of 100 KW.

The second phase calls for installing 400 KW at a cost of INR 3.68 crore. It will be completed by December 31.

The prime feature of the 100 KWproject is to reduce 250 kg carbon emission gas per day and substitute at least two lakh grid units per year.

The INR 92 lakh project was commissioned with the help of Alectrona Energy, the solar manufacturing and EPC Company of the Zynergy group.

The INR 100 crore wind energy project would generate 14.5 MW, Mr. George said. The project would be completed by 2016-17.
